TWA Travel Tips For Britain, 1956

Darlings, I found the cutest travel book on my pop into the thrift store yesterday! From 1956, it's a spiffy little reference guide given to customers of TWA traveling to Britain....well, London mostly. Having lived in London for a few years, I had to have it just to see how much things have changed. And with a ten cent price tag who could resist?
It's just too brill for words! And speaking of words.....

Here are a few of the terms that TWA felt Statesiders should know if traveling 'cross the pond' in '56:

In England, I've never heard an extension cord called a 'flex', a billboard called a 'hoarder' (isn't that what you call someone with 50 cats?), or a water heater called a 'geyser'. Alternately, all the Americans I know call a refrigerator a refrigerator, not an 'icebox' and 'leg-pulling' is a common term where I come from in the States? The other suggestions were pretty well spot on, though. I was surprised at the omission of the standard 'lift'='elevator' and 'cab'='taxi', though.

The graphics are really my favourite part of the book. As I've mentioned before, I love great 1950's and 1960's graphics. They thrill me way more than they should! Check out these babies:

This couple is dreaming of London, or so we are told. Frankly, they could save the airfare, as the only thing "London-ish" is the routemaster bus. As there were apparently several of these made, each for a different country TWA flew to, I would assume they used this graphic for all and just changed a couple of the icons in each book to fit the country.

They've never seen a man standing next to a tree before....

Spearmint Rhino c. 1956....

While the youngin's are dining at Claridge's....

......Gran and Gramps head to the strip club!

Because everyone wears bowlers and tweeds to the pub...

He looks far to happy for a man whose wife just bought that much stuff....

Anyone else find the phallic symbolism in this one a bit disturbing?

Mother's dreaming of men in skirts, while father is laughing at Willie's porn star 'tache.

There was a section on money which, this being pre-decimalization, was pretty interesting. I'd had plenty of older generations of Brits try and explain this system to me. I figured it might be easier seeing it written down on paper. It isn't. If you can figure this out, you're quicker than I am....

...but did you check out the exchange rate? JEEEZ!

It goes on to give you loads of information on various places and things you may need to know about, like car hire, the US embassy (back then, it's phone # was Grosvenor 9000!), the addresses of some Turkish baths if you're into that sort of thing, and churches of different denominations, sports teams and where they play.

Most all of the hotels listed still remain and the theatre listings were almost all familiar.

The shopping listings were interesting....again, most are still around today and generally in the same address:

Notice that Debenham's hasn't yet dropped the 'Freebody's' from it's name. Also, Derry and Tom's is listed at the address that would, almost two decades later, become 'The Most Beautiful Store In The World', Big Biba!....of course, now it's a load of crappy chain stores like Gap...blech!

The rest of the booklet is dedicated to sights that are still popular tourist traps, Buckingham Palace, Changing of the Guard, and, of course, "Big Ben, kids...Parliament".

Speaking of travel, I've recently found my great-grandmother's travel scrapbook and journals. I'll be sharing some of the lovelies from that very soon! I hope you'll tune in!

Ta, Dolls!

Pet Milk Magazine, 1964

Hi Hi, poppits! If you're anything like me, you love '50s and '60s advertising. When I'm reading modern magazines, I just skip over all of the annoying adverts....but give me a vintage mag and I spend just as much time staring at the ads as I do the articles! Anyhoo....

For your enjoyment, here's a little gem I found from 1964. It's a Pet Milk Company magazine and it's all kinds of fun...and it held a special surprise for me, which I can't wait to show you!....

Click and enlarge to read the articles!

This reminds me of those 'how it's made' segments on Mr. Rogers!!

This is a great article about Billy Jeff Burns, who was the Pet Milk man in my hometown in the '60s! Uber cool!!

Even more uber cool is the fact that the store seen here:

....is my grandparent's store! How nifty to find that!!!

Next up, an article on Big Shot aerosol chocolate syrup...

Holy cow, I want me some of that!!!!

Then there were a couple of tech-ish articles, that frankly were just boresville....but the pics were smash smash!!

Here's the 'high tech' Pet computer....

And some great photos of some Pet stockholder meetings. Why don't men still dress this snappy?????...or smoke pipes???

More products with lovery '60s packaging...

Stuckey's!!

Little late for Valentines Day, but here's your Whitman's chocolate fix anyway!...

The mandatory product placement recipes....

Inspirational Dolly: Hayley Mills

I've always been a massive fan of Hayley Mills. Remember, my loves, when the Disney Channel was fabulous and played all those glorious classic Disney films...especially on Saturday afternoons? Ahhh, the good ole days!

Of course, my first Hayley film was Pollyanna. Whose wasn't?......

Ever since, I've thought she was simply fantastic in every film I've seen her in. Here's a little sample of Hayley's looks through the '60s.....

My FAVOURITE Hayley film of all time is The Parent Trap!

Here's the best part of the whole film...well, in my little word it is anyway!....

How much do I want those purses behind her in the photo on the left??? Sometime I wish I had a pot 'o money and a time machine!

While most of you have probably seen That Darn Cat, Pollyanna, The Parent Trap, The Moon Spinners, etc, etc...I find that many of her best performances are almost unknown amongst most people I know.

My top three underrated Hayley films that I recommend to one and all with piccies and clips to tantalize and convince you to see them (or see them again!)......

The Chalk Garden, 1964:

In it, Hayley plays the most vicious little brat you could ever imagine! I mean, I've never thought I could ever HATE a character that sweety pie Hayley played! But boy, oh boy is Laurel a nightmare!

For this one, you get the whole film! Lucky you!

Next up, is Twisted Nerve, 1968......

Ok, so our beloved heroine is again beloved and sweet as can be in this gem of a thriller. Unfortunately, Martin/Georgie (played ever so creepy-like by Hywel Bennett) isn't. And he's got his sights set on her. For all you kids who were spooked by Daryl Hannah's whistling in Kill Bill and Tate's whistling in American Horror Story, you ain't seen nothing till you've seen the original whistle......

Yes, To Sir With Love fans, that's "Mister smarty Denham" in the second clip as Hayley's boyfriend!

The third and final is the only Hayley movie that I officially own (on dvd, that is):

The Trouble With Angels, 1966....

The phrase, "running with the wrong people" certainly applies to Rachel, played by June Harding. And the phrase, "bad influence" applies to Mary Clancy, played by Hayley. They get into more trouble in a day than most of us did in our entire girlhood! Not only do you get a fab performance by Hayley, but for no additional $$, you get Rosalind Russell and, the creme de la creme.....Gypsy Rose Lee in a cameo as St. Francis Academy's dance teacher, Mrs. Phipps!

Killer hat, dontcha think?!

Hayley is one of those celebrity kids...but she's a celebrity kid that would have made it without the name of her celeb father, Sir John Mills, behind her. More importantly, she's a perfect 1960's dollybird.

Do you cupcakes have a favourite Hayley film?
